One year after joining the department as an assistant, Michael Hemphill was named VMI's Director of Athletic Equipment Services.
During his time as an assistant, Hemphill assisted in collecting, washing, drying and delivery of laundry for all 16 varsity teams. Hemphill also assists with the ordering and inventory of all apparel and equipment for all teams, the fitting of shoulder pads and helmets for the football team and setting up and tearing down all equipment for practices.
He was certified by the Athletic Equipment Manager Association in July of 2017.
Hemphill comes to VMI from Wofford College where he served as the head football equipment manager for four years. His primary responsibilities included budgeting for road trips for the equipment, training and filming staffs as well as the ordering of all Adidas apparel for coaches and players. Other assignments involved the set up and tearing down of equipment for summer camps and maintaining an updated sizing chart for all players.
Before serving as the head football equipment manager, Hemphill was the assistant football equipment manager for a year and a half at the school. In addition to his many duties, he took on an internship for the Director of Football Operations which involved filling out transcript requests for recruiting and entering that information into JumpForward. He also set up and tore down for coaching clinics and assisted with booking hotels for away trips.
Hemphill has also worked in various roles with the Greenville Drive and the Greenville Road Warriors baseball clubs from 2011-13.
Michael graduated cum laude from the University of North Greenville in May 2014 with a bachelor’s degree in sport management after transferring from USC Upstate.
