LEXINGTON, Va. – Opening conference play last week with a pair of losses, the VMI men’s soccer team looks to pick up its first victory of the season when it faces the Bucs of ETSU Tuesday at 4 p.m. at Patchin Field in Lexington, Virginia.
The Keydets (0-7-2, 0-2) are coming off a 4-1 loss Saturday night at Mercer, a game which VMI led early on thanks to a goal by freshman Willson Tuck in the opening moments but let slip away during the course of the match.
Senior David Wright and Tuck lead the Keydets with two goals on the year while Christopher McGhan, Cooper Duplantis, Richard Quispe and Sohrab Shaikh each have one assist. Wright continues to pace the team in shot attempts with 17 thus far and is followed by McGhan’s eight. Jessie Zavala and Cooper Duplantis both have four shot attempts on the year for third place on the team.
About the Bucs (4-2-3, 1-0-1 SoCon)
ETSU is coming a week in which it went 1-1 in league action with a scoreless tie with UNCG followed by a 3-2 victory over Wofford on the road Saturday night.
The Bucs’ attack is led by Fletcher Ekern and Nick Spielman, who are both credited with two goals midway through the season. Bruno Andrade and Austin Bihlmeyer play key roles in the offense and lead the way with five and two assists, respectively. Ekern has tallied 25 shot attempts and is followed by Danny Barlow’s 16 and Serge Gomis’ 11.
Jonny Sutherland is the lone netkeeper for the Bucs and has played nearly 900 minutes for the season, allowing 11 goals for a 1.11 goals-against average and .725 save percentage. He has recorded a total of 29 saves to go with three shutouts on the year.
