LEXINGTON, Va. – Opening the 2017-18 season against rival The Citadel, the VMI men’s and women’s rifle teams split wins with the Bulldogs Saturday at Kilbourne Hall.
The Citadel’s men’s team came out on top with a 4552 aggregate score with the VMI men’s team trailing with 4472 points. The VMI women came in third with 4382 points while The Citadel women arrived in fourth with 4109 points.
The VMI men’s smallbore squad shot a 2226 combined score for the day and 2246 air rifle aggregate while the VMI women earned a 2150 smallbore and a 2232 air rifle total.
Freshman Jacob Lagace tallied the best score in the smallbore with a 568 and John Pitman placed second with a 553. Sophomore Nick Reynolds scored team points with a 549 while fellow sophomore William Davidson logged a 545. In the men’s air rifle, returning All-SoCon sophomore Hunter Jacob led the way with a 567 ahead of Reynolds’ 557. Davidson (554) and Chris Milliken (553) finished right behind.
The VMI women were paced by Samantha Alexander in both the smallbore (556) and air rifle (568). Senior Katherine Watson registered a 539 for second on the team in the smallbore ahead of the 535 shot by both Alice Chiu and Jamie Foster. Sophomore Kelia Aardema shot a career-best 544 for the smallbore.
Sophomore Sabrina Bell logged the second highest air rifle score on the team with a 562 trailed closely by Watson’s 560. Senior Kaitlyn Morrison rounded out the air rifle scorers with a 559 for the category, a career-high score topping her previous best of 554.
The VMI rifle teams return to action next Saturday, Oct. 7, when they face Morehead State and Georgia Southern at Kilbourne Hall.
