LEXINGTON, Va. – Competing in the second game of a three-game road swing, the VMI lacrosse team travels to the capital of the Commonwealth for a matchup with No. 20 Richmond Saturday at 3 p.m. at Robins Stadium in Richmond, Virginia. The match is the Southern Conference opener for both squads.

On Tuesday, the Keydets (1-3, 0-0) came up a little short at Wagner as they could not overcome a five-goal deficit in the fourth quarter and the Seahawks earned the 11-8 victory in Staten Island.

Senior Brad Nardella scored a career-high three goals in the game and now has seven on the year, matching his previous career high for goals in a season set during his freshman year in 2014. Senior Chris Spada turned in a strong effort by tallying two goals of his own during the game in addition to two assists for four total points, matching a career high set earlier this season against NJIT in the home opener.

Junior Wesley Sanders has now earned at least one point in 18 consecutive games, while Kyle Walsh scored his second career goal on Tuesday.

About the No. 20 Spiders (4-1, 0-0 SoCon)

After facing a grueling exhibition schedule in late January/early February against the likes of Navy, Christopher Newport and Loyola, the Spiders opened the year with an easy 15-3 victory over No. 17 Fairfield before turning in wins the following week over UMBC and Mount St. Mary’s.

Richmond finished the month of February with an easier-than-expected 9-2 win over visiting Marquette and most recently fell for the first time of the year against No. 20 Duke, a 9-8 heartbreaker at home as the Blue Devils sought redemption for the Spiders claiming a win over them in 2016 in Durham, North Carolina.

The Spiders are led by Ryan Lee, who has tallied 21 points on 15 goals and six assists in the early part of the season. Teddy Hatfield has garnered 12 goals and eight assists for the second highest point total on the team with 20, while Dan Ginestro (4 goals, 9 assists) and JP Forester (6 goals, 2 assists) also play crucial roles in the attack.
Peter Moran has won 52 of 93 faceoffs this season and leads the team in groundballs with 28.

Defensively, Brendan Hynes creates problems as he has caused 13 turnovers with Ryan Dennis close behind with 10. Goalie Benny Pugh has played all 300 minutes in the circle and has 59 saves to 26 goals allowed having faced 145 shot attempts.
