Associate Athletic Communications Director (WSOC, T&F, XC, Rifle, LAX, Secondary FB/BKB)


Daniel Whitehead enters his second year as the associate athletic communications director at VMI where he serves as the media relations liaison for women’s soccer, rifle, track and field and lacrosse in addition to serving as a secondary contact for football and basketball. He was promoted to the position in August of 2018 after serving for three years as the assistant athletic communications director.

Added to the athletic communications staff in March 2015, Whitehead came to the Institute from nearby Southern Virginia University where he oversaw the media relations and stat-keeping efforts for the Knights’ 15 varsity programs for two years.

Before Southern Virginia, Whitehead spent the 2012-13 academic year as an athletics media relations graduate assistant at the University of Wyoming, where he was the primary media contact for the women’s soccer, men’s and women’s cross country and track and field programs.

Prior to Wyoming, Whitehead attended grad school at West Virginia University where he earned a dual Master of Business Administration and Master of Sport Management degree from 2010-12. In addition to his studies at West Virginia, Whitehead served as a sports information graduate assistant where he was the primary media contact for the wrestling program as well as the women’s cross country and track and field teams.

Whitehead graduated from Brigham Young University in 2009 with a bachelor's degree in communications with an emphasis in public relations. During his final two years in Provo, he served as an intern with the BYU Athletic Communications office where he was the primary media contact for the men’s and women’s golf and cross country teams.

A native of Salt Lake City, Utah, Whitehead served a two-year service mission in Argentina for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints from 2004-06.

Daniel and his wife, Bethany, reside in Buena Vista with their children Noah, Holden, Wesley and Lydia and golden doodle, Luka.
