Men's Soccer Season Ends with Loss at Furman

GREENVILLE, S.C. – With a shot at advancing to the semifinals round of the SoCon Tournament, the VMI men’s soccer season came to a close with a 7-1 loss at Furman Saturday night at Stone Soccer Stadium in Greenville, South Carolina.

VMI freshman Fabian Munoz-Velasquez scored his first career goal for the Keydets on a penalty kick late in the second half for the Keydets’ fifth goal of the season, but the effort was not enough to overcome four first-half goals by the host Paladins and three more in the second.

Furman was relentless in its attack during the night, taking 14 shots in the first half and 13 in the second to register 27 total to VMI’s two. VMI keeper Robert Allen surrendered five goals in the outing before he was replaced by freshman Jared Breeden early in the second half. Allen recorded seven saves while Breeden logged three.

The Paladins’ Danny Kierath scored the first two in the opening 10 minutes of the match before Laurence Wyke scored two midway through the period. Kyle McLagan registered a Furman goal early in the second half while Emery May and Josiah Baker tacked on the final scores in the final 10 minutes of regulation.

VMI senior Campbell Wood earned one shot attempt that required a save from Furman keeper Jonathan Smith in the second half.

As the host institution of the SoCon Tournament, Furman advances to the semifinals round next weekend to face No. 2 seed UNCG. The championship game is slated for Sunday, Nov. 12.
