VMI sophomore guard Garrett Gilkeson's (Parkersburg, W.Va.) day-by-day account of the Summer Euro '17 trip to Belgium, Holland, France, and Germany.

Tuesday
Antwerp and Game 2
After waking up to some rain this morning we had a change of plans. Our plans were to go to Bruges in the morning and then to Antwerp for our game in the afternoon, but Bruges is a really pretty place to walk around so we changed plans. We ended up going to a mall in Antwerp before our game, so we were able to spend all of our money on some European clothes. After eating a wonderful meal and getting to try some of their amazing pasta, an American lady overheard us speaking English and was excited to introduce herself. She said she rarely hears English. At our game that evening we played a very good Gent Hawks team. We played more like Europeans and were able to go from nearly a dozen traveling calls from the first game to less than five against the Hawks. Overall, we turned a depressing rainy day into a good day of going broke and playing the sport we love.

Wednesday
Brussels, Belgium and Koln/Cologne, Germany
Due to our change of plans yesterday, we had to combine two days into one and overcome the fact that some of us were broke and still needed to buy souvenirs for our families. As we took the short drive to Brussels, we were able to see the Atomium, which is what Brussels is known for. We also saw the United States Embassy in Brussels, the King’s Palace, the Grand-Place and the Manneken Pis (Brussels Eiffel Tower). Brussels’ famous Belgian Waffles were some of the best we have ever had and most of the waffles around the city were only one Euro so we ate multiple. After leaving Brussels, we made a long-distance drive to Koln/Cologne, Germany where we saw The Dom (The Cologne Cathedral), and were able to try their famous schnitzel and bratwurst. Probably the most beautiful sight we came across today was the Cathedral. We were all amazed by the number of years it took to finish it and the its architectural layout. Overall, it was an amazing day and something we will remember forever.
