LEXINGTON, Va. – Competing in the final match before next weekend’s NCAA Qualifier, the VMI rifle teams gained confidence by defeating UAB Saturday at Kilbourne Hall.
The VMI men won the competition with an aggregate score of 4490 by way of a 2201 in the smallbore and 2289 in the air rifle. The VMI women placed second with a combined 4392 points via a 2171 smallbore and 2221 in the air rifle category. UAB, a women’s rifle program, totaled 2251 total points as the Blazers did not shoot in the smallbore category.
Zach Johnson led the VMI men in the smallbore with a 560 and was followed by freshman Chris Milliken’s 552. Fellow freshman William Davidson came in third for the team with a 548, while freshman Hunter Jacob also scored team points with his 547 for the segment.
Andrew Hickey paced the men in the air rifle category with a 581 followed by Jacob’s 575. Matt Lusardi shot a 574 for the team’s third best tally while Davidson totaled a 559 as the final scorer.
In the women’s smallbore, Rachel Jankelow led the way with a total of 547 points for the section with Samantha Alexander close behind at 546. Katherine Watson shot a 542 and Loyce Lightfoot’s 536 proved to be the final counting points toward the squad’s 2171 smallbore total.
Alexander shot a 571 air rifle tally to lead the VMI women and was trailed by Kaitlyn Morrison’s 554. Kerrie Lightfoot placed third on the squad with a 550 while Watson registered the final team tally with a 546.
The Keydets return to action next Saturday at home with the NCAA Qualifier hosing SoCon foe Wofford College. The match will start at 8 a.m. at Kilbourne Hall.
