LEXINGTON, Va. - Returning to the mat after a week off, the VMI wrestling team was unable to overcome an early deficit as No. 17 Appalachian State registered a 38-6 victory over the Keydets Wednesday night at Cormack Hall.

The second nationally ranked opponent to visit Cormack Hall this season, the Mountaineers made quick work of VMI as they jumped out to a 21-0 advantage before the Keydets could tally points on the board.

VMI senior 125-pounder Dalton Henderson nearly earned an upset over No. 20-ranked Vito Pasone to open the dual, but Pasone managed to close it out in the final period to earn the 9-7 decision. Henderson, who went 0-2 against Pasone last year, nearly ended the streak but came up a takedown short. Despite VMI’s Michael Hulcher nearly earning a pin over No. 24 Colby Smith in the next bout, the App State grappler reversed fortunes and was able to earn a fall over Hulcher in 4:38 to give the Mountaineers a 9-0 lead. Two ensuing pins ballooned the ASU advantage to 21-0 after four bouts.

Keydet sophomore 157-pounder Neal Richards put VMI on the board by grinding out a 4-2 sudden victory decision over App State’s Gavin Londoff to give the Keydets three points.

Following a major decision victory for App State at 165 pounds, VMI senior Shabaka Johns earned his second straight SoCon dual win by defeating Elliott Raiford by a hard-fought 9-7 decision for the Keydets’ final points of the night.

The Mountaineers would go on to claim the final three bouts en route to the final score.

VMI quickly hits the road to continue Southern Conference action as it travels to Davidson for a Friday night match. The first bout is scheduled for a 7 p.m. start in Davidson, North Carolina.
