LEXINGTON, Va. - The 2014 VMI Winter Relays have been canceled, according to information released Monday by VMI's Director of Track and Field and Cross Country, Darrin Webb. The decision was made early Monday.
"It certainly disappoints me to make this announcement, but we have regretfully decided to cancel this year's VMI Winter Relays," stated Webb. "There are NCAA regulations regarding entries, including multiple ones new this year, that must be met for an event to not only count towards Division I standards but to allow for Championship (IC4A/ECAC) qualifying. If we had continued on and not been able to meet these regulations, our athletes would not have been afforded the full opportunity to qualify for these championships. With that in mind, we will take a contingent to a meet at Appalachian State that weekend.
With that said, we are very disappointed at having to cancel this meet. We appreciate those who have continued to come to the Winter Relays through the years, and fully plan to make this meet a part of our multi-meet home schedule when we move into our new facility. Unfortunately, it is simply not feasible for us to have this meet in 2014."
VMI will now travel to Appalachian State on Feb. 22 for a one-day meet in Boone, N.C., and the Keydets are back in action Feb. 14 at the Liberty Quad in Lynchburg.
