Women?s Soccer Names Captains for 2009 Season

LEXINGTON, Va. ? VMI head coach women's soccer coach Bryan Williams has announced the team's captains for the upcoming 2009 fall season.

Rising seniors Audrey Falconi (Las Vegas, Nev./Centennial), Chrissy Beach (Las Vegas, Nev./Rancho) and Alexi Staton (Roanoke, Va./Northside) will share the captaincy for the 2009 campaign, marking the first time since 2005 that the program will have tri-captains.

“The three captains for the 2009 season reflect three consistent starters for my program,” said Williams.  “With one from Virginia and two from Nevada, they reflect academic excellence and a commitment to the military traditions of VMI.  They have each proven to be strong women role models, as well as respected cadets.  Chrissy Beach has had an offensive influence on the field since her arrival on post.  Audrey Falconi has been a presence in the Big South from the moment she stepped on the field for VMI and Alexi Staton has persevered through numerous injuries to be a strong team player and team leader.  Together they balance one another and will give the women's team a great group of leaders to look to for support and direction.  I am proud to have Chrissy, Audrey and Alexi as my captains for 2009.”

Falconi is a three-year letterwinner that has twice been named All-Big South Conference in addition to her league Freshman of the Year award in 2006.  Last season, she helped the Keydet defense to its best season to date, notching six shutouts and a 1.30 goals-against-average, both school records.  A chemistry major, Falconi was named to the CoSIDA/ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District 3 Second Team last fall and she currently ranks as a Battalion Sergeant in the VMI Corps of Cadets.

Beach is also a three-year letterwinner as a forward for Coach Williams.  Last season, she ranked among the Big South's leaders with six goals and 16 points, each of which marked career highs.  She had points in three consecutive games a season ago, including wins over Liberty and Winthrop to open Big South season.  Beach also picked up the first two game-winning goals of her career in 2008, coming against Delaware State and Richmond.  Entering her senior season, Beach ranks third in career assists at VMI, while also placing fifth in points and sixth in goals in her career.  She majors in psychology and plans to commission into the Air Force following graduation.

Staton has lettered each of her three seasons with the Keydets as well.  In 2008, Staton was a key component to the VMI back line that established new school marks in shutouts and goals-against-average.  In addition, she picked up a pair of assists last season, coming in back-to-back games against Winthrop, a 3-0 win, and Charleston Southern, a 1-1 tie.  A biology major, Staton ranks as a Battalion Sergeant in the Corps of Cadets and plans to commission into the Navy upon her graduation from VMI.

The Keydets are coming off of their most successful season in school history, winning a program-best 10 games while tying for second place in the Big South Conference standings.  Following the campaign, VMI was listed among the 25 Most Improved Division I programs in the country.
