LEXINGTON, Va. – Looking to show the progress made over the past few months in preparation for the postseason, the VMI track and field teams head to the Southern Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships hosted by Samford this weekend, April 27-28, in Birmingham, Alabama.
The Keydets look to improve from last year’s seventh-place finishes for both the men’s and women’s teams.
“We are excited about the upcoming weekend,” said VMI head coach Darrin Webb. “We have a couple of injures between the two teams that we are working through, but as a whole we are ready to go. Both teams are mentally and physically preparing for the weekend, and I am confident they will have many outstanding performances.”
“The expectations that I have for the upcoming weekend is that both teams will compete from start to finish and fight for every point possible. I expect both teams to continue to improve on their performances both as a team and as individuals. This weekend is about team and scoring points. The times, heights, and distances are only important to the point that we finish ahead of the competition.
“We have to run smart races, we have to be prepared in the jumping and throwing events to capitalize on our opportunities right from the beginning, and we have to be willing to give it our all both physically and mentally.
“I am asking a lot of many of those that will be competing this weekend. They will be sore, some will be banged up, but they have to continue to work and fight through it, to create the best team finish possible. We are excited for the opportunity in front of us, and are looking forward to this weekend.”
