RALEIGH, N.C. – Looking to start the outdoor season on the right note, the VMI track and field teams earned several IC4A qualifying marks and showed improvement on the first day of the Raleigh Relays Friday in Raleigh, North Carolina.

Tiffany Quick earned a personal record in the discus with a throw of 46.61 meters, an ECAC qualifying mark and currently ranks second in the Southern Conference. Rafael Mas ran a 48.96 in the 400 meter run, also an IC4A qualifying mark.

“As a whole I thought today went really well,” said VMI head coach Darrin Webb. “There is some very good competition at this meet and I thought we made a lot of progress today.”

In the throws, Solomon Ghosh threw a 46.61-meter discus in his collegiate debut for the event, while Sarah Leckman earned a 13.09-meter distance in the women's shot put to start the outdoor season. In the men's pole vault, Griffin Kowal earned a height of 4.42 meters for a great start to the season.

In the sprint events, Jordin Poindexter ran the 100-meter dash in 11.02, while Ariana Ruffin (12.47) and Eliza Brooks (12.48) earned great times for the event on the women's side.

Johnny Walker ran the 400-meter in 49.57 seconds, while Ahliyah Williams ran the women's 400-meter in 57.92 seconds. James Granderson competed well in the men's 110-meter hurdles, opening the year with a time of 15.60 seconds.  

Freshman Gavin Jenkins earned a solid time of 9:30.26 in the men's steeplechase in his collegiate debut.

The men's sprint medley relay team of Jordin Poindexter (200m, 21.6), Caleb Minus (200m, 22.6), Jonathan Gray (400m, 49.6) and Jahanzib Shahbaz (800m, 1:53.9) ran a sixth-place time of 3:28.

The Keydets return to action Saturday for the second day of competition at the Raleigh Relays.
