LEXINGTON, Va. – Looking to finish the second annual Keydet Invitational with strong performances on day two, VMI track and field accomplished the task including a school record mark in the women's 4x400 Saturday at the Corps Physical Training Facility.
The relay team of Ariana Ruffin, Eliza Brooks, Ingrid Joseph and Ahliyah Williams placed seventh overall with a time of 3:59.43, breaking the former school record time of 4:00.82 set last season by Julia Logan, Christina Hill, Julianne Knoblett and Ruffin. Brooks, Joseph and Williams are all freshmen.
Sarah Leckman performed well in the women's shot put with an eighth-place mark of 13.39 meters (43'11”).
“I was very pleased with the energy level today,” said VMI head coach Darrin Webb. “I thought our team came again today and really competed. The marks will continue to improve, but I thought Sarah Leckman in the shot put, the women's 4x4, and Andrew Arlint in the vault really stood out to me.”
Arlint came in eighth in the men's pole vault with a height of 4.45 meters (14'7”), while Griffin Kowal placed 11th with a height of 4.30 meters (14'1”).
In the women's 400-meter run, Ruffin came out strong with a 12th-place time of 58.80 seconds. Brooks had a good showing in the women's 200 meter with Top-20 placing of 25.82 seconds.
The men's 4x400 relay of Rafael Mas, Jonathan Gray, Jahanzib Shahbaz and Blaine Ashton had a solid showing with a 12th-place time of 3:24.76.
The Keydets return to action next Saturday at home as they host the VMI Team Challenge at the CPTF.
