LEXINGTON, Va. – After four successful seasons and shifting the trajectory of the program upward, VMI head women’s soccer coach Chris Bergmann announced Wednesday he will resign his position to accept the same role at Stetson University in DeLand, Florida.

Over the past four years under Bergmann’s leadership, the Keydets garnered 28 wins including 10 victories against Southern Conference opponents. This past year VMI got off to its best start in program history by reeling off six consecutive wins, topping the previous best 3-0 starts from three prior seasons since the program began in 2003. Defensively the Keydets only allowed one goal over the first seven games to aid the hot start to the season.

“We certainly wish Coach Bergmann, and his family, all the best as they transition to this new opportunity,” said VMI Director of Athletics Dr. Dave Diles. “Chris inherited a challenging situation four years ago, and he, and his staff, have advanced VMI women’s soccer considerably. Our foundation is excellent, and an incoming Head Coach will continue the positive trajectory of our program. I anticipate that we will move rapidly to provide exceptional leadership to our team and the recruits that recently signed National Letters of Intent.”

The Keydets caught momentum at the end of the season by falling by just a 2-1 score to the league’s top team in Samford and then tied Chattanooga, 2-2, on Senior Day. VMI would go on to defeat Chattanooga in the opening round of the SoCon tournament before bowing out with a slim 2-1 loss to No. 2 seed UNCG.

After the 2017 season senior defender Amy Horney was named a second team All-SoCon recipient. Under Bergmann’s tutelage the Keydets also excelled academically with 10 honorees being named to the SoCon All-Academic team since his first year in 2015. During this span at least seven were named to the SoCon Honor Roll every season including nine in 2016 and 2017 (2018 not yet announced by the league).
