LEXINGTON, Va. - The Furman Paladins scored 15 runs in the first three innings, on the way to a 19-1 win over the VMI Keydets in the finale of a SoCon weekend series contested Sunday at Gray-Minor Stadium. The Keydets saw their seven-game winning streak snapped with the loss but did take the series.

After giving up nine and eight-run innings in the first two games, Furman (19-21, 4-8 SoCon) turned the tables by tallying nine in the second inning against Kyle Staats. A three-run double by Jake Crawford was the big blow following back to back bases loaded walks.

The Keydets (21-18, 9-6) got a run in the bottom of the frame, but Furman put up six more runs in the third and four in the fifth against the VMI bullpen to account for the final margin.

On the mound, Kyle Staats (4-3) took the loss after being tagged for nine runs - eight earned - in 1 1/3 innings. John Bertrand was the winner in a spot start, as he moved to 4-1 after allowing just one run in five innings.

Offensively, Nathan Eaton led the Keydets with two hits and reached base for the 28th straight game in the process. That is the longest single-season streak of its kind by a Keydet since the stat began being tracked during the 2013 season, breaking the record previously held by Rob Dickinson.

VMI baseball will return to action Wednesday, when the Keydets take on the Virginia Tech Hokies at Gray-Minor Stadium. First pitch is set for 6 p.m.
