LEWISBURG, Pa. - Jay Broom finished 10th in the invitational men's 5K and did so in IC4A qualifying time, while Brandon White set a new personal best in the 10K and Julia Logan finished second in the women's high jump to lead the VMI track and field teams on the opening day of competition at the Bison Outdoor Classic, contested Friday in Lewisburg, Pa.

Broom timed in at 14:34.04 in the invitational section of the 5K, good for that 10th place finish and an IC4A qualifying berth. Broom was one of 14 athletes to hit the standard in a very quick field. In the only longer race of the day, the 10K, White hit the IC4A standard with a 30:41.42 effort and finished 26th. That is believed to be the third-fastest 10K in school history.

Logan, meanwhile, cleared an outdoor personal best of 1.65 meters (5'5") and was the runner-up in the women's high jump. She remains third all-time at VMI in that discipline.

Other results included Elizabeth Johnston throwing the discus a personal best 40.90 meters (134'2"), good enough for an 11th-place finish, and Ryan Drew finishing ninth in the unseeded section of the men's 5K (14:56.59). Luke Phillips was 22nd behind Broom in the invitational portion (14:57.50), and Logan Luckett ran the fourth-fastest 5K time in school history, 18:07.36, to finish 29th in the unseeded women's 5K.

VMI track and field will return to action Saturday, when the Keydets compete at Bucknell once again. Action gets underway at 9:30 a.m.
