ROANOKE, Va. – Paced by senior 125-pounder Dalton Henderson, the VMI wrestled team saw multiple grapplers perform well at the Southeast Open competed Sunday at the Berglund Center in Roanoke, Virginia.
Henderson came in fifth place in the 125-pound weight class as he went 5-1 for the day, falling in the second round to Rider's Brenden Calas by a close 7-5 decision before reeling off four straight wins. After his loss, he pinned Appalachian State's Logan Durham in 3:32 before earning an 11-2 major decision over The Citadel's Patrick Kearney. He also defeated North Carolina's Tyrone Klump by a 10-4 decision and Princeton's Ty Agaisse by a 3-2 sudden victory decision in the 5th-6th place match.
Hunter Starner (133) and Shabaka Johns (174) both earned opening-round victories before bowing out in consecutive losses.
In the freshman/sophomore bracket, 141-pounder Darren Ostrander won a pair of victories, including a 16-0 tech fall over Shorter's Kalvin Harris, before being eliminated by App State's Brandon Harris by a 7-3 decision. Stevan Smith (149) and Jake Tomlinson (197) also wrestled a solid tournament as each grappled in a total of five bouts and logged 3-2 records for the day.
Smith, a sophomore, opened the bracket with three straight decision victories before being eliminated with two losses. He placed fourth overall for the 149-pound class in the freshman/sophomore bracket. Tomlinson began the tourney with a pin and later earned a fall over Maryland's Nick McShea (3:39) and 6-1 decision over Chattanooga's Ben Stacey. He was ultimately defeated by Army West Point's Gavin Berkley in a fall in 4:22.
The Keydets return to action Thursday as they promptly begin Southern Conference play with a dual at No. 23 Chattanooga Thursday night at 7 p.m. in Chattanooga, Tennessee.
