LEXINGTON, Va. - Interim head coach Chris Skretkowicz has announced the 2013-14 schedule for the Virginia Military Institute wrestling team. The upcoming slate features five matches in The Thunderdome, four of which are Southern Conference duals.
Times for the 2013-14 schedule have not been set, but please refer back to the wrestling schedule page of VMIKeydets.com for updates as the times are finalized.
The Keydets open their home schedule on Nov. 16 with Franklin & Marshall. VMI will host just one dual in the month of December, bringing in SoCon foe Gardner-Webb on Dec. 4.
VMI will have over a month between home matches before Jan. 17 when the Keydets take on Campbell on Jan. 17, followed a week later by a dual with Davidson on Jan. 24. The Keydets’ final match in The Thunderdome will take place on Feb. 23 when defending SoCon Champion Chattanooga comes to town.
The 2013-14 slate kicks off with the Clarion Open on Nov. 3 Clarion, Pa., followed by the Hokie Open on Nov. 10. In addition to the host, Virginia Tech, VMI will grapple Virginia and Skretkowicz’s alma mater, Hofstra University, during the Hokie Open at the Salem Civic Center. Not only will there be three duals during the event, but there will be an open portion of the tournament for individuals. VMI rounds out the first month of wrestling at the King Open in Bristol, Tenn., an event hosted by King College.
With just two events on the docket in December, VMI heads to the Midwest on Dec. 7-8 for the Indiana Duals at Indiana University. During the duals, the Keydets will face the host school, but SoCon opponent Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, Drexel, Northern Colorado and West Virginia.
The new year begins in Fairfield, Conn. as VMI takes on Sacred Heart Jan. 5. Following the Campbell match, the Keydets head to Northern Virginia on Jan. 19 for a dual with in-state foe George Mason. VMI heads south to face Atlantic Coast Conference opponent Duke on Jan. 29 to wrap up the month’s action.
Another trip to Connecticut opens the month of February for the Keydets as they head to the Coast Guard Academy for the All Academy Championship on Feb. 1. Joining the Keydets in New London, Conn. will be the Air Force, Army, Merchant Marine and Naval Academies, as well as Norwich and The Citadel.
Three straight matches on the road, including a pair of SoCon duals, highlight the middle of February, kicking off with Appalachian State on Feb. 7 in Boone, N.C., followed by a trip to Charleston, S.C. to face The Citadel, VMI’s final SoCon road match of the year. On Feb. 15, the Keydets head north along the Susquehanna River to Lewisburg, Pa. for a final non-conference dual with Bucknell University.Campbell will be hosting the 2013-14 Southern Conference Championships on March 8 in Buies Creek, N.C., with berths to the NCAA Championships up for grabs. The national tournament will be held on March 20-22 in Oklahoma City, Okla.
