PRINCETON, N.J. – Antonio Wood posted his best first day decathlon performance ever, while
Quincy Murphy and
Renee Reives were also in action for VMI track and field Friday at the IC4A/ECAC Championships, held in Princeton, N.J.
Wood sits in fifth place after day one of the decathlon, having scored 3,703 points. It is the first time in his four-year career that Wood has scored over 3,700 points on day one, and it included a seasonal best in his final event of the afternoon, the 400-meters (51.82 seconds). He sits 291 points out of the lead and ranks just eight markers behind longtime IC4A rival Felix Siljeback-Larsen of Manhattan, currently in fourth place.
Wood's teammate Murphy, meanwhile, currently sits in ninth with 3,410 points. That is just eight points behind the 3,418 he scored at the Big South Championships, when he notched a 300-point personal best in the decathlon. Murphy's efforts included the second-best high jump mark of his career, a 1.87 meter (6'1 ½”) effort.
Reives was in action in the ECAC discus, one of two events which she qualified for, and placed 22nd with a best mark of 41.51 meters (136'2”).
“We had a good opening day,” said VMI head coach
Darrin Webb. “Antonio and Quincy are closing the season well, and Renee had a breakthrough campaign in the discus. We are looking forward to seeing what our athletes are able to accomplish over the last two days of this meet.”
VMI track and field returns to action Saturday as the Keydets continue at the IC4A/ECAC meet, where action gets underway at 9 a.m.
