IC4A Qualification in DMR Paces VMI at Fast Track Tune-Up

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – VMI track and field notched an IC4A qualification effort in the men's distance medley relay, pacing its efforts at the Fast Track Championship Tune-Up, held Saturday at the JDL Fast Track in Winston-Salem, N.C.

The DMR squad of Avery Martin, Julian Jackson, Jacob Lysher and Jason Thorpe clocked in at 10:27.62 on the 200-meter flat track that will host next week's Big South Indoor Championships. That was good enough for the event win, and with the allowed time conversion for flat tracks to a standardized, banked track time, it amounted to a 10:19.21 time and an IC4A qualifier. It was not without incident, however. On the exchange between Jackson and Lysher, headed into the 800-meter leg, Lysher was involved in a collision with a Montreat runner. The Keydet fell down, but got back up and was still able to help his squad punch their tickets to Boston for March's IC4A meet.

The Keydets also saw their 4X400 relay team – Jordan Bailey, Brandon Hartman, Quincy Murphy and Julian Jackson – finish second in their event with a time of 3:24.56. Andrey Dmitriev continued to round back into form by finishing fourth in the mile (4:25.39), and Murphy was fifth in the 60-meter hurdles (8.44). In addition, Gabe Fisher (7th/2:00.54) and Martin (15th/2:08.05) were in action in the 800-meters.

On the women's side, Kelsey Newcomb led the way with an eighth-place finish in the 800-meters, clocking in at 2:21.88. Leah Schubel was also in action, placing sixth in the 3K with a time of 10:45.15.

VMI track and field will return to action Thursday, opening competition at this year's Big South Indoor Championships in Winston-Salem, N.C. Action gets underway at 10 a.m.
