Keydet Multi Eventers in Action at Liberty

LYNCHBURG, Va. – Antonio Wood and Quincy Murphy finished day one ranked first and third in the heptathlon, respectively, to pace a contingent of VMI track and field multi event athletes competing at the Liberty Open Friday afternoon in Lynchburg, Va.

Wood finished day one with an 84-point lead over Tevan McIntire of Liberty, having scored 2928 points and led from the opening gun in his first heptathlon of the season. The senior won each of the first three events: The 60-meter dash (7.22), the long jump (6.97 M/22'10 ½”) and the shot put (11.48 M/37'8”) and had a chance to expand his lead, but tied McIntire for the best high jump of the day at a 1.93 meter (6'4”) effort.

Wood is clear of teammate Murphy by nearly 300 points, but the sophomore had a quality opening day. He finished second to Wood in the 60-meter dash (7.27), posted the third-longest effort in the long jump (6.75 M/22'1 ¾”) and tied for third in the high jump to help accumulate 2682 points.

The Keydets also saw Sean Connolly rank fifth after the opening day (2338), while freshmen Sean Gardner (2222) and Tyler Robinson (2000) are seventh and 10th respectively.

On the women's side, freshman Amanda Okani had won two of the first four events of the pentathlon, the 60-meter hurdles (9.42) and the long jump (5.18 M/17'0”), and had also tied for the victory in the high jump to give her the lead entering the final event. Okani was overtaken in the 800-meter run, however, and wound up third with 2788 points.

The VMI track and field multi event contingent will return to action Saturday for day two of the Liberty Open. Action gets underway at Liberty University at 9 a.m.
