VMI Track and Field Preview: Jumps

With the graduation of former Keydet standout Ademola Titcombe, the leadership mantle among the VMI jumpers falls to senior Antonio Wood. Wood, the runner-up in the IC4A decathlon last season, has finished in the Big South high jump's top five at three straight conference championships, including a third-place finish indoors in 2012. He is also a past IC4A qualifier and All-Big South honoree in the long jump, and is likely to take on a significant role in both events once again this season.

Along with Wood in the long jump will be fellow senior Nate Gant. Like Wood, Gant is a former IC4A qualifier in the long jump, and he has also scored in the event at the conference level on two occasions (both indoors), finishing fifth in 2011 and sixth in 2010.

Four new faces join the jumping rotation this year, including Avion Jones. Jones is a high jump specialist out of Virginia Beach, where he posted a PR of 6'10" and ranked second in the state in that event during the outdoor campaign. He is also a strong competitor in the triple jump, having notched a lifetime best jump of over 46 feet.

Lamaris "Pete" Reed is also in the mix. Reed is a former district champion in both the long jump and triple jump, and had a particularly notable performance at the Northwest Regional outdoor meet, where he won the triple jump and finished third in the long jump. Brandyn Laury, who was fifth in the long jump at the Central Region's outdoor meet, and Korey Bullard, a past Beach District champion, could contribute as well. Both Bullard and Quincy Murphy may be players in the high jump as well.

On the women's side, the picture is a bit less clear, but there are two potential competitors in sight. Thireyona Legg returns after battling injuries last outdoor season, a year in which she only jumped in two events. Meanwhile, freshman Amanda Okani enters after finishing in the Northwest Region's top eight in both the triple jump and the long jump, and could mix in jumps with her multi event efforts.
