LEXINGTON,
Va. – After a strong outing on Friday, the Virginia Military Institute men's
soccer team suffered a difficult 7-0 loss to Marshall University Sunday
afternoon. The game was the conclusion of the 2012 Jay Sculley Memorial
Tournament, played at Patchin Field.
Marshall
(4-0-1) went undefeated in the tournament, knocking off Liberty University
Friday evening 2-0. The Keydets (1-3-0) went 1-1 during the tournament, as did
George Washington. Liberty dropped both its games 2-0.
The
2012 Jay Sculley Memorial All-Tournament Team consisted of Jahvon Allison (MVP) (Marshall), Tom Jackson (Marshall),
Eddy Prugh (Marshall), Kyle Farmer (VMI), Max Farinholt (VMI), Kyle Forché (VMI), Jean-Pierre van der
Merwe (George Washington), Tyler Ranalli (George Washington), Seth Rudolph (George
Washington), Johnny Torres (Liberty), Uriah Bentick (Liberty) and Greg White (Liberty)
Marshall
jumped out to an early 6-0 lead in the first half. Allison, the tournament's
MVP found the back of the goal just four minutes in. Jackson was the only repeat
scored on the day, notching the team's third and seventh goal, which came on a penalty
kick. Prugh, Jack Hopkins, Matt Freeman and Andrew Ferguson each chipped in
goals. Four of the Herd's goals were assited; Jackson, Allison and Freeman each
logged helpers, as did Anthony Virgara and Aaron Dini.
VMI's
keeper Daniel Kitchen had a tough go of it, taking the loss and only making one
save.
Other
than the final goal total, the Keydets and Thundering Herd played a relatively
even game on paper. VMI took 17 total shots, paced by four from senior captain
Kip Zechman, while Marshall tallied 19. VMI out-shot the herd 11-9 in the
opening half. Marshall logged 13 corner kicks, including eight in the second
half while VMI managed nine in total.
Three
Keydets, Zechman, Farinholt and Aaron White, were booked with yellow cards.
Cade Parton was hit with the game's first yellow just before the halftime
break. VMI was whistled for five fouls while the Thundering Herd was called
seven times.
VMI
travels to Farmville, Va. on Wednesday night for a clash with the Big South
Conference's newest arrival, Longwood University. Game time is slated for 7
p.m. at Athletics Complex.
