SoCon Release
SPARTANBURG,
S.C. – After running his winning streak
to nine and going 2-0 last week, VMI senior Matthew Brock was named Southern
Conference Wrestler of Week on Wednesday afternoon, as announced by the league
office.
Brock,
who is 24-8 on the season, becomes the first VMI wrestler to win the honor this
season and marks the first time the plaudits have come to Lexington since Dec.
15, 2010 when Brock was also named Wrestler of the Week.
The 174-pounder tallied a pair of SoCon wins
last week, helping the Keydets to split a pair of matches. VMI picked up its second
SoCon win of the year 22-15 over Gardner-Webb, but fell to The Citadel 36-6.
Last Thursday, Brock, a native of Richmond,
Va. Won his eighth straight match with a pin just 30 seconds into the second
period, giving VMI the lead for good.
But his biggest accomplishment of the week
came on Sunday afternoon against The Citadel. Brock was one of two VMI
wrestlers to claim victory and did so in remarkable fashion, knocking off the
No. 18 wrestler in country, Turtogtokh Luvsandorj.
After
the match was deadlocked at 1-1 through regulation, Brock pulled out a takedown
in the final minutes of overtime, collecting his ninth-straight win in the
process.
Brock
and his teammates head to the Keystone State for a Thursday night match against
Millersville University. The Keydets and Marauders are set to begin at 7 p.m.
in Pucillo Gymnasium in Millersville, Pa.
