Getting to Know: Baseball's Alan Watts

Major: English

First Baseball Memory/How You Got Involved in the Sport: I was five and played shortstop for my T-Ball team. I distinctly remember yelling choice words at the crying “first baseman” after I drilled him in the chest with a throw. It was his fault. He was watching clouds instead of paying attention to the game. I took great offense to this lack of devotion and made sure he knew disrespect to the game would not be tolerated.

Best Athletic Memory:
Defeating #1 Virginia in front of a packed Gray-Minor Stadium during the 2010 season.

Why VMI: Why not? We get a pretty sweet ring and I never have to worry about what I'm going to wear to class.

Favorite VMI memory: Ring Figure Weekend with Base Co. and friends.

Goals for the upcoming season: To win a Big South Conference Championship.

Favorite movie/book and why: MOVIE: The Shawshank Redemption - Although I have liked the movie for years, I grew a fonder appreciation for it upon my arrival at VMI. Cadets can relate to/appreciate the movie in a way most cannot. This reason lies within the film showing us a story of men who have formed a tight-knit community through harsh circumstances. It's a deep plot: one about continuity in a lifetime, based on friendship and hope.  I have been known to get in heated arguments when people do not accept it is as a motion picture masterpiece. BOOK: Out by Natsuo Kirino. It's a head scratcher.

When you have an hour of free time, you like to...: Have Rubik's Cube solving competitions with teammate/roommate Mike Devine.

What sporting venue would you most like to visit? AT&T Park in San Francisco when the Dodgers are in town.

When surfing the Internet, what web site do you visit most frequently? MLB.com

Favorite sport to watch (other than baseball): Olympic Curling. No doubt.

Favorite sports moment as a fan:
November 1st 2010. World Series Game 6. Brian Wilson strikes out Texas' Nelson Cruz to deliver Giants Nation their first title since moving from New York. I don't think I accomplished a single thing academically during the playoffs that year.

If someone would look at the songs I have, on my IPOD or computer, I'd be embarrassed for them to see I have this song: Absolutely nothing. I only put quality on my pod. I wouldn't dare mix pure dreck with favorites like Bruce Springsteen, Creedence Clearwater Revival or The Eagles. I shudder at the thought of atrocious music like Miley Cyrus or Justin Bieber ever intruding my pod.

If you could eat dinner with three other people, living or not, who would they be and why?

1. Roberto Clemente – He is my father's all time favorite baseball player and I heard countless stories about him growing up. I would be honored to be in the same company of such a respected, intriguing, benevolent, and talented person.
2. Gary Allan – One of my favorite musicians. He is a class act and has an interesting story to tell.
3. Morgan Freeman – His voice makes my ears happy. I'd ask him to read something during dinner and/or narrate the evening's events. Imagine if you will: “Alan takes a bite” (dramatic pause) – “there is a fiery look in his eyes” – (really dramatic pause) –“proving the steak is quite pleasing to him.”
