Keydets Drop Tight Match to Mount, 1-0

EMMITSBURG, Md. – Despite a strong first start of 2010 for Heidi Beemer, the VMI women's soccer team dropped a tight 1-0 match to the Mount of Mount St. Mary's Friday evening in Emmitsburg, Md.

In the 61st minute of the match, the Mount's Sadie Winship took a corner kick. She played the ball to Jenna Stern, who found Kaylyn Mahon with a cross. Mahon headed the ball by Beemer at 60:51, accounting for the game's lone goal.

With the win, Mount St. Mary's improves to 1-1-1, while VMI drops to 0-4 with the setback. Beemer made nine saves for the Keydets in her first start of the season, while Alicia Miller stopped two attempts for the Mount.

The first five minutes of the game was played mostly in the midfield, with the Keydets notching the first shot on goal, a Casey Ridings try that was stopped by Miller. Over the next 16 minutes, the home team outshot VMI 4-0, with three of those being on goal. Beemer was up to the task, however, and the game remained scoreless.

The Keydets made a push in the 22nd minute, when Miller stopped Amanda Berrios, and a VMI corner kick went for naught. From there, the teams again settled into mostly midfield action, with only one shot on goal being registered the remainder of the half, and the game went to intermission tied, 0-0.

Mount St. Mary's came out quickly in the second half, getting off three shots in the first 5:09. Beemer then made another save at 57:13, but the home squad was able to earn a corner kick just two minutes later, setting the stage for the eventual winning goal.

After Mahon's header score at 60:51, neither team could notch a goal the rest of the way, allowing Mount St. Mary's to hang on for the 1-0 win.

Friday night's game saw the Mount hold a 22-3 edge in shots, while also earning eight corner kicks to VMI's two. Fouls were virtually even, as the home squad had 10 to VMI's nine, while Mount St. Mary's had the match's only two offside violations.

VMI women's soccer will return to action Wednesday, taking on George Mason in Fairfax, Va. Match time is set for 7 p.m.
