HUNTSVILLE, ALA. - Former VMI pitcher Michael Bowman, after being named to the Southern League (AA) All-Star team on July 7, pitched a perfect inning in the contest on July 12 in Huntsville, Ala.
Bowman, who is currently 7-8 on the year with an earned run average (ERA) of 6.05, worked a 1-2-3 inning in the League's All-Star game, retiring the side in order in the third frame. He struck out Tampa Bay farmhand Drew M. Anderson to open the inning, before inducing Evan Frey (Arizona) and Osvaldo Martinez (Florida) to ground out. Bowman threw 11 pitches in his lone inning, seven of them for strikes.
The former Keydet, despite his ERA, has had other high spots during his second pro season. The campaign has been highlighted by a six-inning performance against Mississippi on May 20, when Bowman worked six innings and gave up just one hit. He walked two and struck out five in what remains his best professional performance to date.
Bowman was a ninth-round draft pick of the Milwaukee Brewers in the 2008 MLB Draft, marking the highest a Keydet had been drafted since former major leaguer Ryan Glynn, who was tabbed in 1995's fourth round by Texas. Bowman was second in career ERA at VMI (3.32), as well as being fifth in wins (14) and strikeouts (209).
