Okoye Tabbed Big South Freshman of the Week

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – VMI's Stan Okoye has been named the Crons Brand Big South Basketball Freshman of the Week for games played Jan. 11-17, as announced Monday morning by the conference office.

Okoye averaged 16.3 points, 9.3 rebounds and 54.1 percent from the floor (20-of-37) in three games, including 20.5 points and 11.5 rebounds in two Big South contests.  He hit 9-of-13 shots from the field and scored a career-high 21 points with 10 rebounds and four blocked shots against UNC Asheville, and followed with 20 points and a career-high 13 rebounds plus two blocks against Gardner-Webb – all coming off the bench for the Keydets.

The two double-doubles were Okoye's second and third of his young career, with the other having come against UNC Wilmington earlier in the year. This week, Okoye also was 8-of-10 from the line and finished 16-of-26 ( =61.5 percent) from the field in the two Big South games, as he became the first Keydet to be honored with a conference weekly award this season.

Okoye and his teammates will return to action Thursday, as they travel to Radford to take on the defending Big South champion Radford Highlanders. Game time at the Dedmon Center is set for 7 p.m.
