Women?s Swimming & Diving's Trip to N.J. Highlighted by Win over NJIT

NEWARK, N.J.- The VMI women's swimming and diving team competed in a pair of events last weekend, with the four duals highlighted by a 44-43 win over host NJIT on Friday evening.

The Keydets (1-6) also fell in duals to Manhattan (54-31) and Mount St. Mary's (68-24) on Friday before dropping a 77-21 decision at St. Peter's in Jersey City on Saturday.

In Friday's win over New Jersey Tech, the Keydets counted five event winners, led by junior Chelsea Nugent, whose 100 breaststroke time of 1:17.15 not only won the event against each of the meet's three opponents, but also broke her existing school mark. Nugent also scored a win over the Highlanders in the 200 individual medley (2:27.94), while sophomore Veronica Lentsch took the 50 freestyle (27.18) and freshman Pin-Fen Chen won the 100 backstroke (1:12.14). The Keydets also scored a relay victory in the 200 freestyle relay, with Nugent, freshman Glendon Robertson, Lentsch and Chen teaming for a 1:54.17 clocking.

Nugent's 100 breaststroke time and the Keydets' 200 freestyle relay each notched wins against both Manhattan and Mount St. Mary's in the dual meets, while Nugent's 200 individual medley and senior Ateala Tuff's 6:41.37 time in the 500 freestyle each scored first-place finishes against Manhattan.

On Saturday against St. Peter's, the Keydets lone victory came on the diving board, where junior Briana Allard's score of 115.05 in the one-meter competition brought home top honors.

VMI returns to the pool next month, competing in the Yellow Jacket Invitational, hosted by Randolph-Macon on Dec. 4-5.
