CHARLOTTE, N.C. - VMI quarterback Kyle Hughes (Williamsburg, Va.) has been named the Big South football Choice Hotels Offensive Player of the Week, as announced by the conference office Monday afternoon.
In his second start of the season, Hughes accounted for all four touchdowns and amassed 274 yards of offense (133 rushing, 141 passing) in the Keydets' 38-28 loss at No. 1 Richmond.  He is now the only player in VMI football history to have multiple games with over 100 yards both rushing and passing, and the 274 yards of total offense was the second-highest total of his career, trailing only his performance on Sept. 29, 2007 versus Robert Morris.
Hughes gave VMI an early 7-0 lead on a 44-yard touchdown pass to Tim Maypray, then brought the Keydets to within seven points late in the second quarter with a touchdown pass to Mario Scott.  The VMI quarterback scored on a 1-yard touchdown run in the third quarter, then added a 66-yard TD rush and two-point conversion in the fourth stanza for VMI's final points of the day.  Hughes led VMI to its most points vs. Richmond since 1995, and the most points allowed by the Spiders in their last 12 games.
All told, the senior became just the 14th player in VMI football history to account for at least four touchdowns in a single contest. Earlier this season, Hughes surpassed the 2,000-yard career passing plateau and has now thrown for 23 career touchdowns, tied for 4th on the VMI all-time list. This is the second time the senior has been named Big South Offensive Player of the Week, as he also earned the honor for his outing against Robert Morris in 2007.
