LEXINGTON, Va. - Trailing by only a goal at the half, the VMI men's soccer team played a physical match but ultimately fell by a 2-0 score to visiting UNCG Tuesday afternoon at Patchin Field.

The Keydets (0-10-2, 0-5) had several close scoring opportunities during the game including a shot by senior David Wright early in the first half that sailed just a foot to the right of the goal post. The Spartans (6-5-2, 3-1-1) outshot the Keydets by a 29-3 ratio throughout the game and kept VMI keeper Robert Allen busy as he tied a season-high nine saves in his second complete game of the year.

Midway through the opening half, UNCG forward Matt Mattis took a deep cross from teammate Tevyn Henry and slid the ball into the net for a 1-0 advantage for the Spartans. The visiting team would add an insurance goal by Cyril Owolabi in the 55th minute for the game's final result.

In addition to Wright's close shot attempt, freshmen Hector Rivera and Pa-Alieu Ann also tallied shots for the Keydets. The Spartans were led by Leeroy Maguraushe's five shots while Jesper Larsson and Matt Mattis each recorded four. Maguraushe also earned the assist to Owolabi for the second Spartan goal.

VMI returns to action Saturday with a home match against Furman. Kickoff is slated for a 1 p.m. start at Patchin Field.
