LEXINGTON, Va. - Competing in its first Southern Conference home game of the season, the VMI men's soccer team fell by a 5-0 score to visiting ETSU Tuesday evening at Patchin Field.
The Bucs applied constant pressure throughout the match by maintaining possession and limiting shot opportunities for the Keydets as ETSU registered nine shots in the first half and five in the second while allowing just one VMI shot in the game.
Following one ETSU attack, Ben Holt took a rebound off a teammate's deflected shot, took a step past the VMI defender and shot the ball into the net for a 1-0 Bucs advantage at the 21:04 mark. ETSU forwards Nick Spielman and Bruno Andrade would add second and third goals for the Bucs in the opening half to give ETSU a commanding 3-0 lead at the break.
After a VMI foul deep in its own box just minutes into the second half, the Bucs were given a penalty kick opportunity and converted for a 4-0 advantage. ETSU's Richmond Taylor scored the fifth and final goal for the Bucs at the 79:54 mark.
Keydet junior midfielder Jonathan Martinez was credited with VMI's shot attempt in the second half. ETSU's Bruno Andrade paced the Bucs with four shot attempts throughout the match.
ETSU goalie Jonny Sutherland was awarded the win to improve to 5-2-3 on the season while VMI's Jon Harrington falls to 0-7-2 despite four saves in the effort.
VMI returns to the pitch this Saturday at Wofford to continue SoCon action on the road. The Keydets and Terriers will kick off at 6 p.m. in Spartanburg, South Carolina.
