Rose Named Men's Soccer Head Coach

LEXINGTON, Va. - Former VMI assistant and interim head coach Richie Rose has been named the Institute's new head men's soccer coach, as announced Monday by VMI athletic director Donny White.

"I am happy to name Richie Rose our new men's soccer coach," stated White. "The players were very enthusiastic about his ability to make them better, so I am confident our team will make great strides under his leadership."

Prior to his current run at the Institute, which began in May of 2008, Rose came to VMI from Lander University in Greenwood, S.C., where he was an assistant for four years. While there, the England native's duties included working with the players on a daily basis in technical and tactical training, and physical conditioning.

In addition to those responsibilities at his alma mater, Rose was the head coach at Greenwood High School for two seasons, where he was in charge of the coaching and management of the program. Finally, he spent two years as a coach educator for the South Carolina Youth Soccer Association, which entailed his being a part of the process of youth soccer coaches earning various certifications.

"I am proud to have the opportunity to lead this program and work with this group of players here at VMI," said Rose. "I would like to thank Coach White and the players for their support and belief in my ability to continue the professional soccer environment created here by the former head coach Ben Freakley."

The new VMI head coach has also run one portion of the South Carolina State Olympic Development Program. He also spent several years coaching in England, where he coached at The Middlesbrough Football Club Youth Academy and The York City Football Club Centre of Excellence.

Rose holds his Union of European Football Associations UEFA A License Diploma, United States Soccer Federation A License, and the UEFA Youth Coaches Award. He is currently a coach educator for The Virginia Youth Soccer Association and a State Olympic Development Program coach and finally, he is currently pursuing his Masters degree in coaching
education from Ohio University.
